The Polish People’s Republic (PRL)

was a socialist state that existed from 1947 to 1989 in the territory of present-day Poland. It was governed by the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR), and its political system was based on a communist model, which was an alliance of party, state, and economic power. The PRL was characterized by central control over the economy, a repressive security apparatus, and restrictions on civil and political liberties.

ZOMO (Motorized Reserves of the Citizens’ Militia)

and

MO (Citizens’ Militia)

were state security organs in the PRL. ZOMO was a special unit of the Citizens’ Militia responsible for suppressing demonstrations and controlling the population, often using brutal methods. MO was the main police force, tasked with maintaining public order and enforcing the law.

ORMO (Voluntary Reserves of the Citizens’ Militia)

was a paramilitary volunteer organization that cooperated with MO and ZOMO in maintaining public order and carrying out propaganda activities in support of the communist regime.

The Polish People’s Army (LWP)

was the armed forces of the PRL. As part of the Warsaw Pact, the LWP was tasked with defending the interests of the Eastern Bloc. The military was closely tied to the party leadership, and its main objective was to maintain communist control in the country.

Finally,

Wojciech Jaruzelski

was a communist politician and general of the Polish People’s Army who served as the First Secretary of the PZPR and President of the Polish People’s Republic from 1981 to 1989. Jaruzelski was a central figure in PRL politics during the period of martial law (1981–1983), which he imposed to suppress resistance to the communist regime. His rule was characterized by repression against the opposition and the curtailment of civil liberties.
