Description:

[UPDATE 0.61 – thank to developer Tebeinteresno for text label colour updates!]

This is a 15.2 x 15.2 km map representing the city of Grozny, Chechnya. Most of this map is a dense urban environment, recreated to a very high level of detail.

Grozny is the largest city and capital of Chechnya. Founded by the Russians in 1869 on the site of an older Cossack garrison fort, it soon grew to become a major oil refining, transportation, and military hub in the Russian empire and Soviet Union. By the end of the 1990s, its population was over 420,000 people. The vast majority of major combat during the wars in Chechnya during the 1990s took place in and around the city – resulting in tens of thousands of casualties on the Russian federal, Chechen rebel and separatist, and civilian sides. Though known as one of the USSR’s most comfortable cities to live during the 1970s and 80s, Grozny thus gained a more unfortunate reputation as the most heavily fought-over and destroyed city on earth after Berlin in 1945 and before Aleppo in 2014.

Using period-accurate maps and having read through dozens of personal accounts (and even Soviet-era tourist guides), the main goal of this mod was to try and recreate Grozny as it was in the 1990s – much of the city looks very different today, having been essentially flattened during its two wars. It is a tribute to the tens of thousands of people, most of them civilians, who died during these terrible conflicts – and a labour of love, having taken some 300 hours of work to date.

Tip: there is a VERY large number of labels (over 2000) featured on this map, with streets, individual buildings and landmarks, and many other interesting points labeled. Also transposed are height markings from the Soviet-era topographic maps used by the Russian (and, presumably, also Chechen) forces during the conflict and commonly used for directions. This makes for interesting exploring – but can get extremely cluttered when zoomed out. Remember that you can turn labels on and off with the Options menu, or by pressing Ctrl+L while in game.

Note: this map is intended for use with the Chechnya Database mod, which can be found here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1903536349
However, the database mod is NOT required – you can play the map with default Armored Brigade units if you wish. It will work, though you may find urban combat on this scale

This map and the accompanying DB mod are required by the [Caliber-10] and [Group North] scenario sets, which are designed for them.
