Description:

Welcome to Thalassophobia: restored! This version of Thalassophobia is meant for people who still want to play the mod but don’t want to deal with many issues that no one else seems to want to fix.

The Rundown

Thalassophobia (meaning "fear of the ocean depths") is a Barotrauma mod that attempts to expand on within-ship progression systems whlie keeping a focus on social interaction.
Many mods such as Into The Abyss or XanMonsters focus on tweaking monsters and creatures to ramp up the difficulty as to make the game more interesting. Thalassopobia does not alter the difficulty and is balanced around vanilla. Instead, there is a focus on adding easy to learn but difficult to master systems that intertwine to entertain you for hours on end.

This mod is compatible with everything, as it only non-destructively adds content. Almost nothing is overridden, only thing would be the hand cuffs allowing the player to escape from them.

What it adds

There are too many things to list thoroughly every item that this adds without overextending this description, but they can be summarized:

The Botanist:
  • A new scientist job exists, for which there are two variants: The Botanist and the Geneticist. Both are unique with diverse items and talent trees tailor made towards their jobs.
  • The botanist can plant a variety of dangerous fauna that grow produce for fabrication. Saline, opium, and ethanol can be harvested and, with a stroke of caution, your ship can find itself profiting handsomely. Maintaining this farm is not easy. Leaving the saline plant alone will spawn maggots that bring back your dead as abominations, while getting too close to mushroom spores unmasked will cause a pandemic, and so on. Thalassophobia’s plants make vanilla’s look like child’s play. Can you withstand the bio-hazard and come out rich?
  • The geneticist is able to scan living creatures to obtain their genetic code, which can then be used to spawn more or splice with the DNA of their crew-members. There are tens of mutations to choose from that can alter your speed, armor, health pool, resistance, what you breathe for oxygen, and can even give you abilities like breaking down doors, healing crew-mates, or stealing health. Upgrade not just your gear, but your crew-mates as well. All your friends will be jealous of your ability to play god.
Clowns:
  • A new clown job exists, for which there are two variants: The Jester and the Mime. Both have unique items and talent trees as well.
  • You may be put off by the clown role, but truthfully it’s not as much of an outlet as you might think: Anyone who was going to mess around on your ship will do it anyway regardless of a job. Having a clown to choose just makes it obvious who the troublemakers are.
  • The jester has a portable fabricator that they can use to assemble clownery items out of odds and ends they find around the ship. Whoopee cushions, banana peels, bowling balls, and many more.
  • The mime cannot speak at all but has superpowers. Invisible walls, silencing spray, and so on. Communicate by writing with a pen on a sign.
  • There are tons of new items with a focus on social interaction such as bomb collars and suicide vests. These will lead to fun situations among your crew.
