Power Grid

Power Grid is the updated release of the Friedemann Friese crayon game Funkenschlag. It removes the crayon aspect from network building in the original edition, while retaining the fluctuating commodities market like Crude: The Oil Game and an auction round intensity reminiscent of The Princes of Florence.

The objective of Power Grid is to supply the most cities with power when someone’s network gains a predetermined size. In this new edition, players mark pre-existing routes between cities for connection, and then bid against each other to purchase the power plants that they use to power their cities.

However, as plants are purchased, newer, more efficient plants become available, so by merely purchasing, you’re potentially allowing others access to superior equipment.

Additionally, players must acquire the raw materials (coal, oil, garbage, and uranium) needed to power said plants (except for the ‘renewable’ windfarm/ solar plants, which require no fuel), making it a constant struggle to upgrade your plants for maximum efficiency while still retaining enough wealth to quickly expand your network to get the cheapest routes.

How to Play

The rules can be found inside the mod on the table.

About this mod

I added scripting to the game because I felt I could, and that the game would improve because of it.

Features in this version:

  • Automated setup (market shuffeling, removal of cards using seated player count, power plant order)
  • Automated determining of turn order (who goes first, how many cities does each player have)
  • Discard pile between player hands. Money in discard goes to money piles, power plants go to garbage, resources go to bags
  • Automation of turn assignment, (new! now both with and without in-game Turn system)
  • Adding Robot expansion
  • Automated resource refreshment based on player count
  • Automated step and game end detection
  • Discard boards now also count the money on top of them
  • Feature toggles / settings panel
  • Added New Power Plant Deck expansion
  • Money draw and discard buttons
  • Money transaction log
  • Automate step specific actions like; Discard last card of market on next turn, discard first card of market on step 3 etc.
  • A "put power plant below market" button
  • Multiple boards including; Germany, Benelux, USA, China, Korea and France
  • Power management
  • Basic bidding support
  • Improved bidding support (actual in-game bidding)
  • Language support: Dutch (NL)
  • Language support: Spanish (ES)

Wish list of upcoming changes:

  • Game state / (debug) logging in ‘Notes’
  • More in-game statistics (amount of $ spent on resources, amount of $ earned with power plants, etc.) (thanks @frankieg33 for the suggestion)
  • More maps, post your suggestions in the Discord for the one you’d like to see added
  • More languages support, join Discord to help add more
  • A tutorial
  • ‘Quick’ settings

Be sure to checkout the changelog for any updates since I am still actively developing this mod,

Credit

This wouldn’t be possible without the board game itself, all credit due to Rio Grande Games.
Credit for Gikerl who created the original mod, but without scripting.
His version can be found here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=724265314
Also credit to Vorir for the Robots expansion: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=916740704
And credit to Guard1an4 for the New Power Plants expansion: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1167229707
Also credit to Slipstream for the suggestion to use the actual market piece instead of … not doing that
Last but not least; all players who gave feedback and feature suggestions. Some features like the money plates wouldn’t have been added otherwise.
