Description:

Castel Sant’Angelo is a rotunda standing at the bank of the Tiber River. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a tomb for himself and his family, but was later converted to a military fortress. Its current name derived from the legend that that Archangel Michael appeared atop the fortress to end a plague. The popes used Castel Sant’Angelo for defenses. During the Sack of Rome in 1527, Pope Clement VII took refuge in Castel Sant’Angelo after the Swiss Guard were annihilated in a delaying rear guard action. Castel Sant’Angelo was also used as a prison for those the Papal State deemed as heretic, for example, Giordano Bruno had been imprisoned there for years until he was burned at the stake.

“Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.”- Revelation 12:7-8
