Description:

The British Museum is the first national museum in the world. It was founded on the wish of Sir Hans Sloane, a physician and collector who amassed a collection of more than 70,000 objects during his lifetime, and handed over his belongings to King George II for £20,000 to ensure that the collection would not be disorganized after his death. The British Museum was eventually opened at Montagu House in London. The British Museum’s collection expanded in tandem with colonialism, including but not limited to the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, and artifacts from Dunhuang and the Old Summer Palace. While the collection of this museum was extremely vast, some of them were looted or stolen from other countries, so the ownership and attribution of these artifacts has always been a matter of controversy, and incidents such as the theft of more than 2000 pieces of the collection exposed in 2023 only worsened the problem further.

“The collection and accurate arrangement of these curiosities constituted my major contribution to the advancement of science.”- Hans Sloane
