FS Gr 623 & 625 Locomotives

La locomotiva gruppo 625 affonda le sue radici nell’ottimo e precedente progetto della locomotiva gruppo 600.
La 625 è una locomotiva a semplice espansione e con vapore surriscaldato (surriscaldatore schmidt).
Il rodiggio è 1 3 0 e le ruote motrici sono da 1510mm.
La locomotiva è mossa da 2 pistoni che azionano un sistema a stantuffi Walschaerts.
La caldaia della locomotiva è la stessa della gr 640: sviluppa lo stesso quantitativo di vapore e la stessa potenza (800cv) ma permette il raggiungimento di velocità maggiori grazie alle ruote motrici di grande diametro.
La massa della locomotiva è 54,5t, mentre il tender è 35,3t. Quest’ultimo può trasportare 15 metri cubi d’acqua e 6t di carbone.
Il veicolo è fornito di freno ad aria compressa e di riscaldamento a vapore per le carrozze trainate.
A partire dagli anni 50, alcune unità del gruppo sono state modificate mediante l’applicazione del preriscaldatore sistema Franco-Crosti. Questo equipaggiamento permetteva l’utilizzo del vapore esausto per il pre-riscaldo dell’acqua da immettere nella caldaia, garantendo una maggiore efficienza in termini di consumo di carbone.
Il nuovo gruppo venne siglato con il numero 623.

The class 625 locomotive is an evolution of the excellent previous model class 600 locomotive.
The 625 is a simple expansion locomotive with superheated steam (schmidt superheater).
The running gear is 1 3 0 and the drive wheels are 1510mm.
The locomotive is powered by 2 pistons which operate a Walschaerts piston system.
The boiler of the locomotive is the same as the class 640 : it develops the same amount of steam and the same power (800hp) but this vehicle can reach higher speeds thanks to the large diameter of drive wheels.
The mass of the locomotive is 54.5t, while the tender is 35.3t. The tender can carry 15 cubic meters of water and 6t of coal.
The vehicle is equipped with a compressed air brake and steam heating for the towed carriages.
In the 50’s, some units of the group were equipped with the Franco-Crosti pre-heater, a system that was able to use the exhaust’s steam to pre-heat the water for the boiler, resulting in coal save for the consumption. The newly group was named "623".
