━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━Gullver NS-012 is an Icelandic stern trawler built in 1983 in Norway. Operated by fishery Gullberg HF and Gullberg EHF until 2017 when it was acquired by Síldarvinnslan HF.
While trawling in 2008 Gullver caught something a little more than just fish and, a depth charge. The coast guard was called, and the depth charge was destroyed. In 2021 Gullver’s trawl became stuck to smth on the ocean floor. They sailed in all directions but the trawl wouldn’t budge, meanwhile, a US navy vessel stalked from a distance curious about its odd sailing pattern. They pulled until the steel rope to trawl doors snapped, meaning the ship had lost its trawl. Gullver’s crew didn’t like the idea of a ghost net so they went home and got new equipment and returned and recovered the trawl. Stuck to the trawl, was a trawl from another ship, a liferaft, a boom, spotlights, a radarmast, and more debris.
To my knowledge, the wreck that Gullver trawled up has yet to be identified, but the two most likely possibilities are that of Sæúlfur BA or Fróðaklettur GK. Sæúlfur sank in 1966 while Fróðaklettur sank in 1963 after colliding with coast guard vessel Ægir in foggy weather.
The fishery currently operating Gullver, Síldarvinnslan, has been in some hot water recently due to their purchase of another fishery called Vísir HF, as worries grow the Icelandic fishing industry is being monopolized.
