Description:

ÖBB TS (multiple unit express train) 4010 "Transalpin"

From 1965, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) initially procured three six-car trainsets of the 4010 series for the parade train “Transalpin” to replace the 4130 series, which was originally designed for local transport.

Soon afterwards, further sets were procured for inner-alpine long-distance traffic, some of which differed in their equipment (window construction, equipment in the restaurant area).

Due to the continuous 2 + 1 seating in the second class, the train offered a considerable increase in comfort and was so successful that even the six-part trains were no longer sufficient and often had to be operated in double traction.

From 1965 the trains reached Basel SBB as TS 13/12 "Transalpin".
From 1968 the trains arrived as TS 311/312 "Johann Strauß" in Frankfurt / Main.
From 1969 the trains reached Munich as TS 360/361 "Rosenkavalier".

Over time, the international connections were switched back to locomotive + classes for reasons of capacity and economy, the 4010 series was used in high-quality travel in Austria.

From 1990, the trains were extensively modernized, the power cars (and control cars) lost their characteristic corner windows (except 4010.022 for a short time). Swivel sliding doors were installed instead of the rotary folding doors. Some of the trains were adapted and fully air-conditioned for EC traffic.

From 1991, the trains even reached Frankfurt / Main again as EC 120/121 "Johannes Kepler".

In the course of time, the trains were pushed ever further out of the high-quality express train traffic, even had to serve as regional express trains in the Waldviertel.

The last trains were decommissioned at the end of 2008. In terms of comfort, legroom and design, there is still no worthy successor to this day and there will also be none (out of economy).
