Description:

For the advancing electrification program in the post-war period, the BBÖ decided to further develop the proven 1170.2 series, later ÖBB 1245. In 1950 the locomotive factory Floridsdorf and ELIN delivered two E45.3 series still in DRG series designation to the BBÖ. Due to the weight savings through welded construction, the performance could be increased slightly. In 1951 8 locomotives were delivered as BBÖ series 1170.3. From 1952 the remaining 6 locomotives were delivered as class 1040. This series had an arrow-shaped front with sloping front windows and was therefore a forerunner in the appearance of all ÖBB locomotives up to the 1980s. In the 1960s, numbers 1 to 10 also received the new front, all locomotives received new headlights, followed by final signals. Other later modifications involved various shifters appearances, including the bogies, expansion of the electrical resistance brake, and a few more. This robust locomotive was initially used for express trains, but was soon pushed back into regional and freight train traffic. In 2003 the last locomotive in this series was taken out of service.
