ÖBB 1044/1144:
From 1978 the Austrian Federal Railways procured this electric thyristor locomotive in series. This was preceded by positive experiences with the 1043 series (corresponds to the Swedish Rc2) and the two prototype locomotives. The 1044 is a universal locomotive, suitable for heavy express train service as well as for freight train service, both in the lowlands and on the mountain routes. At the time of commissioning, it was the most powerful four-axle electric locomotive in the world!
The first locomotives had low coarse grids, due to serious problems with flying snow in the area of the fan intake, the fans (in different designs) became higher in the successor series.
From 1989 onwards, the successor series 1044.2 was procured, with improved bogies, sound insulation and gear ratio. Until the delivery of the Taurus (ÖBB 1016/1116/1216), these locomotives were the show horse in the high-quality express train service of the ÖBB.
From 2002, the 1044.2 series, and later all other series, were equipped with multiple and push-pull controls and redrawn into the 1144 series.
