Heatmap population overlay (adlet)
This is a population overlay based on the concept of a heatmap.
I decided to add my own overlay for population that has colors generally based on the concept of a heatmap, with things progressing from blue to red (in this case as population density grows). If you see red, call your construction crew so they can build a line and your spouse so they can approve the spend :).
I decided against using green because every base map overlay I have seen has a lot of green from vegetation.
The colors I thus selected are these: gray – blue – purple – magenta – pink – red – bright orange – orange – dark yellow – medium yellow – yellow – light yellow – lemon – pale yellow – off-white
As much as it may seem like I overkilled on the yellows, you will actually see very little yellows in most cities. This is because with the standard 350-color gradient scale used for most of these layers, most cities simply do not have population densities in the upper half of these gradients. Even such a populated city as Tokyo shows just limited yellows. Thus I moved most colors into the lower-density half of the gradient scale, leaving just oranges, yellows and whites to deal with the upper density half. So this style may not work well for more densely populated cities.
In the more densely populated cities (Manhattan, New Delhi, many cities in China) you will actually see a lot of whites as the densities exceed the scale limits. But this is the same as seeing a lot of purple in most other overlays available. I included screenshots of some larger and some smaller cities above.
I chose to assign to the lowest density population a lighter gray. Although you may not need to put a transit line into those areas, at least you can see that they are inhabited.
Feedback as always is welcome.
