Description:

The 5000 Series is an EMU operated by Kobe Municipal Subway on the Kaigan Line.

Commercial operation of the 5000 Series began with the Kaigan Line’s opening in 2001, following the Japanese ‘light metro’ technical standards. The type is powered by linear motors, with two installed in each car. Automatic train operation system is utilized on board, although drivers are still present in all services. All operations are carried out with 4-car sets, there are planned extensions to 6-cars should the demand arise, and platforms on the Kaigan Line are built to accommodate 6-car consists. The passenger cabins features standard subway style long seating, and both LED text displays and route maps with indicator lights are installed for pathfinding. All displays and announcements supports English in addition to Japanese. From 2016 works were carried out to replace interior lighting and headlights with LEDs to reduce power consumption. A total of 40 cars were manufactured prior to the line’s opening, where all operations are carried out by the type.
