Manuel subjugated Hungary and Jerusalem, launched an invasion of Italy and Egypt, puppeted Serbian politics, and kept a personal friendship with the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He was the one man holding the Eastern Roman Empire together and when he died it all fell apart. He loved personal combat, especially fighting on horseback with lance in hand, as the Latins did.
He also pardoned his treacherous, murderous cousin, encountered failure after failure, and left behind a state that was set to collapse barely twenty years later.
This complex and nuanced figure is not well represented in Crusader Kings 3. I’ve corrected his traits here.
I’ve also changed his son’s traits to calm and compassionate, a more balanced take on such a little known figure than the fairly ridiculous judgement that an teenage boy who watched both his parents die was lazy and craven. That the figure of Ioannes Komnenos also doesn’t have accurate traits shows that whoever was doing the character history for these Komnenian Emperors was very lazy.
