Description:

What is it?

Founder of the Republic adds a single intrigue decision allowing you, as a feudal (but not tribal) Duke, to found a Merchant Republic and continue playing as its first Prince-Mayor.

To take the decision, your character must:

  • Have their Primary Title at Duke tier (i.e. Petty King, Doux, Raja etc.).
  • Be independent.
  • Have their capital in a coastal province.
  • Personally hold a City in that province (a vassal holding it doesn’t count).
  • Not have trade posts of any existing Merchant Republic in any of their demesne.provinces.
  • Have at least 500 gold.
  • (NEW IN 1.4.0) If you are using the ‘Way of Life’ DLC you must either have Business Focus, or instead be of Vaishya caste.
  • Be at peace and not under a Regency.

The following effects occur on taking the decision, or shortly after you become Prince Mayor:

  • Loss of 250 prestige
  • If you are of Brahmin or Kshatriya caste, you will be reduced to Vaishya caste (only effects characters who have caste)
  • +20 opinion with Patrician vassals for 10 years
  • +20 opinion with Midas Touched, Fortune Builder and Vaishya vassals for 10 years (not cumulative with Patrician effect)
  • +20 opinion with Midas Touched, Fortune Builder and Vaishya courtiers for 10 years (not cumulative with Patrician effect)
  • Permanent -15 opinion with feudal adult members of your character’s dynasty who are not Midas Touched, Fortune Builders or Vaishya

Only players get the decision, NPCs need not apply.

Disclaimer

Once you become a Republic YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO THE MERCHANT REPUBLIC MECHANICS, INCLUDING ANY AND ALL BUGS, UNEXPECTED BEHAVIOURS OR INCOMPATIBILITIES IN THEM. I generally can’t fix things with the fundamental mechanics. If the problem is serious enough then the best I’m going to be able to do is exclude the types of characters who get the problem from taking the decision at all, similar to how I previously excluded female characters from taking it.

Usage with 2.3.x or earlier versions of CK2

If you want to use this mod with an older version of CK2, you will need to grab the appropriate version from the Paradox forum thread (see below) and install it manually. The version here on the workshop is now only compatible with 2.3 and higher.

What about Counts, Kings and Emperors?

If you’re willing to tolerate the extra implausibility of Kings and Emprerors declaring Republics you can use Founder of the Republic – Any Rank. Unfortunately Count level Republics are hard-coded to be unplayable.

What happened to the ‘A Game of Throne’ (aGoT) version of this mod…?

Since the ‘A Game of Thrones’ mod is a total conversion it won’t work with unaltered vanilla mods like this one. Unfortunately for several versions now CK2 rewrites mods uploaded to Steam Workshop in such a way as to break mods altered to work with ‘Game of Thrones’ so they simply never load. I’ve given up waiting for a fix for that bug and taken that version down from the Workshop, as there’s no point having a broken mod up confusing people.

If you want the AGoT version you will need to grab it the link on the Paradox Forum thread (wee below) and install it manually,

Using code from Founders of the Republic in your own mod

If you want to use the Founders of the Republic code as part of your own bigger mod — for instance one that models the rise of a particular republic, or has a republic creation as part of its mechanics — I’m perfectly fine with that. Just give me and this mod a mention in the credits.

Compatibllity with version of CK2 earlier than Horse Lords

If you need an older version of the mod for CK2 versions prior to 2.4.1, see the Paradox forum thread linked below.

If you’re having trouble accessing the thread, make sure you registered your CK2 with Paradox.
