A method which can reduce probability of game crashing due to lack of memory/vertex buffer is to enable console , then type in "r_lod 1" or "r_lod 2". This effectively reduces the total number of vertices for models ingame which can avoid exceeding the vertex buffer , but sadly it will also lower overall model/graphic quality for models ingame that have LODs (for example map props).
