Borobudur is a monument to the Buddha, built around 800 CE by the rulers of the Śailendra Dynasty on the island of Java, Indonesia. Constructed from gray andesite-like stone, the temple features nine stacked platforms—six square and three circular—crowned by a central stupa. The temple (or “Candi”) is adorned with over 500 Buddha statues and nearly 3,000 bas-relief sculptures. These intricate carvings depict the life and teachings of the Buddha, forming the largest collection of Buddhist sculpture in the world.
