Peter the Great Cruiser (English: Pyotr Velikiy Cruiser, Russian: Пётр Великий, hull number: 099, Soviet ship name: Юрий Андропов, translation: Yuri Andropov, original hull number: 183) is a nuclear-powered missile cruiser under the Russian Navy and the fourth ship of the Soviet 1144-type cruiser (NATO: Kirov class).
Peter the Great Cruiser is the world’s largest non-aircraft carrier combat ship in terms of tonnage and the only non-aircraft carrier nuclear-powered surface combat ship in service in the world. It is mainly used for ocean-going anti-ship, anti-submarine and air defense operations. In combat, it mainly serves as the core force of the maritime formation, and together with other ships, it forms a missile cruiser formation to perform the task of attacking enemy combat ships and destroying enemy transportation lines.
The Peter the Great cruiser was started on April 25, 1986 at the Baltic Shipyard, launched on April 29, 1989, and commissioned on April 19, 1998. It is the flagship of the Russian Navy’s Red Banner Northern Fleet.
