Description:

The T-80BV is a Soviet main battle tank, representing a significant upgrade to the T-80B. The most prominent difference from its predecessor was the introduction of the "Kontakt-1" explosive reactive armour (ERA) system, which dramatically increased the tank’s protection against both HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) projectiles. Furthermore, the T-80BV received a more powerful gas turbine engine, the GTD-1000TF, producing 1100 hp. This allowed the tank to maintain the high power-to-weight ratio and excellent mobility characteristic of the T-80 series, despite the increased weight from the added ERA.

The main armament remained the 125 mm 2A46M-1 smoothbore gun, capable of firing a variety of ammunition types, including APFSDS, HEAT, and HE-FRAG (High-Explosive Fragmentation) rounds, as well as the 9M112 "Kobra" guided missile. A coaxial 7.62 mm PKT machine gun and a 12.7 mm NSVT "Utes" anti-aircraft machine gun provide effective suppression of infantry and low-flying aircraft. The fire-control system includes a laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, and night sight, ensuring high accuracy in various conditions.

The T-80BV was actively used by the Soviet Army and, after the collapse of the USSR, remained in service with Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and other countries. It has seen action in various military conflicts, demonstrating both its advantages and disadvantages, primarily related to the high fuel consumption of the gas turbine engine and its complex maintenance requirements. Despite the emergence of more modern tanks, the T-80BV remains in service and continues to undergo modernization.
