To celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2012, the Norfolk Southern Railway painted 20 of its newest locomotives in commemorative schemes of its predecessors. The decision was made in favour of the 20 companies that probably had the greatest influence on today’s Norfolk Southern Railway. In total, the history of the company includes well over 100 predecessor railways and can be traced back to the 1820s.
