Description:

Play as the Basilissa and regent of Judea, Salome Alexandra; in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.

Judea is named after Judah (both realms sharing a common area), but translated from the time of Persian occupation. The Persians used Aramaic as the administrative language of the Levant, in Aramaic the region was known as Yahudya, however the fall of the Achaemenid Empire saw Macedon, Ptolemaic Egypt, and the Seleucids enforce Greek culture, legalism, and syncretic religion in the region. The Greek Seleucids were victorious in the Diadochi Wars and slowly they encroached on the traditions of the Judahites (from this name, Jew is derived), eventually the final straw was Greek suppression of Jewish monotheism thus triggering the Maccabean Revolt which led to the Hasmonean dynasty leading the Israelite people (both the Jews of the south and the Samarians in the north). The Hasmoneans were effective conquerors and even force converted peoples such as the Idumeans, but ironically they used the Greek language and Greek legalism. It was under the Hasmoneans that the Sadducees and Pharisees became political rivals. Judea also fell to the Roman Republic and Roman Empire during the Hasmonean dynasty, resulting in a governing Idumean dynasty under Herod the Great, he was loyal to Rome.
