Changchun Railway Vehicles DK2/3/4
The DK series (DK standing for Dian Keche(电客车), meaning ‘Electric Train’) are subway trains produced by the Chinese rolling manufacturer Changchun Railways Vehicles, beginning in 1967 with the DK1 prototype for the first line of the Beijing Subway. Eventually, serial production began with the DK2, which incorporated a number of changes from the original design, including changes to the door and window arrangment, changes to the headlights and changes to the overall dimensions of the carbody. The DK2 series were successful in service, and marked China’s first succesful subway train. The DK3 is an improved version of the DK2, with advancements such as air conditioning and openable windows. The DK4 is a further development of the series, largely identical to the DK3 but with further safety improvement, such as fireproofed interiors and in-cab automatic block signalling. 112 DK4s were built exclusively for use on the newly opened Pyongyang Metro. Every train in the series features welded steel bodies and emergency exits at either end of the carriage, and consist of two semi-permanently coupled coaches, though they usually run with 4 coaches coupled together. Most of the series is now withdrawn, however a number remain in preservation, with at least 1 DK3 vehicle preserved and at least 1 DK4 vehicle is preserved for use on special occasions (likely the first vehicle rode by Kim Il Sung). Other DK4 trainsets were converted for mainline use, being fitted with pantographs and having their current collection shoes removed.
