Laika Memorial

Bronze monument dedicated to the memory of Laika, is located at 12 Petrovsko-Razumovskaya Alley, opposite the building of the Moscow Military Research Center. It was inaugurated on April 11, 2008.

Laika (1954-1957) was a Soviet dog who became the first terrestrial living being to orbit the Earth. He did so aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft on November 3, 1957, a month after Sputnik 1, the satellite made 2,370 orbits and disintegrated upon entering the atmosphere on April 14, 1958.

At the height of the Cold War, the Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, who assumed command of the Soviet Union two years after the death of Joseph Stalin, was enrolled in a space race against the United States, then he proposed sending a dog into space to find out if it was possible for a living being to survive the orbital launch and ultimately, if a human could ever man a spacecraft, and what his reactions would be to such a flight, as at that time, there was not enough technology to guarantee the return of the satellite, the animal would be sent to certain death.

The international media admired the Soviet achievement, but when her death was reported, applause turned to protests from animal rights activists, and the sending of animals into space began to cease with the launching of humans. Yuri Gagarin, who spent an hour and a half in space in 1961, said he was the ‘first person and the last dog in space’.

Her journey made her one of the most famous dogs in the world. In Star City, Laika is depicted on a corner of the plaque to fallen cosmonauts. On the monument to the conquerors of space in Moscow, Laika and Lenin are the only characters who can be recognized by name. Stamps with her image were created in different countries. Various products and souvenirs were created in her memory, and she also appears in several literary works and musical groups.

Monumento de bronce, dedicado a la memoria de Laika, se encuentra en el numero 12 de la calle Petrovsko-Razumovskaya Alleya, frente al edificio del Centro de Investigacion Militar de Moscu. Fue inaugurado el 11 de abril de 2008.

Laika (1954-1957) fue una perra sovietica que se convirtio en el primer ser vivo terrestre en orbitar la Tierra. Lo hizo a bordo de la nave Sputnik 2, el 3 de noviembre de 1957, un mes despues del Sputnik 1, el satelite dio 2.370 vueltas en orbita y se desintegro al entrar en la atmosfera el 14 de abril de 1958.

El pleno auge de la Guerra Fria, el lider sovietico, Nikita Kruschev, que asumio el mando de la Union Sovietica dos años despues de la muerte de Joseph Stalin, se enrolo en una carrera espacial contra Estados Unidos, entonces se propuso enviar un perro al espacio para averiguar si era posible que un ser vivo superara la puesta en orbita y en definitiva, si un hombre podia tripular alguna vez una nave espacial, y cuales serian sus reacciones ante un vuelo de esas caracteristicas, como en ese entonces, no habia la tecnologia suficiente para garantizar el retorno del satelite, el animal seria enviado a una muerte segura.

Los medios internacionales admiraban el logro sovietico, si bien cuando se informo de su muerte, los aplausos se transformaron en protestas de los defensores de animales, el envio de animales al espacio empezo a cesar con el lanzamiento de seres humanos. Yuri Gagarin, que permanecio una hora y media en el espacio en 1961, dijo que fue la ‘primera persona y el ultimo perro en el espacio’.

Su viaje la convirtio en uno de los perros mas famosos del mundo, en la Ciudad de las Estrellas, Laika esta representada en una esquina de la placa a los cosmonautas caidos, en el monumento a los conquistadores del espacio en Moscu, Laika y Lenin son los unicos personajes que se pueden reconocer por su nombre, en distintos paises se crearon sellos de correo con su imagen. Varios productos y souvenirs fueron creadas en su memoria, asimismo aparece en varias obras literarias y grupos musicales.
