直9直升机，为我国借助法国的海豚SA365N/N1型直升机引进和仿制而成，直-9武装型的最新改进型之一，已经装备了陆军和空军航空兵。直-9W装备部队之后，解决了我军长期没有武装直升机的问题，但由于该机不具有全天候作战能力，且存在航程有限、航电系统相对落后、人机界面不够友好、载弹量有限且武器射程有限等问题，极大地影响了部队整体作战性能的发挥。因此，研制性能更好的武装直升机迫在眉睫。这也为中国研制专业武装直升机WZ-10和WZ-19奠定重要基础
