Madness at Malta – Battle of the Strait of Sicily
It is November 7, 1984, and the conflict between the Soviet Union and NATO continues to rage across Europe and the Atlantic. The upheaval has stretched NATO’s resources thin, creating an opportunity in the central Mediterranean. Taking advantage of NATO’s distraction, Libya and Algeria—emboldened by the power vacuum—move to seize the strategic island of Malta. Control of Malta, situated at a crucial crossroads of the Mediterranean Sea, would grant leverage over maritime trade routes and undermine NATO’s ability to project power in the region. Both North African states have dispatched a joint naval and amphibious task force to capture the island before NATO reinforcements can arrive from Sicily or other nearby bases. The battle for Malta’s ports, airfields, and radar facilities will determine who holds sway in the central Mediterranean.
