Description:

Remember when big-arse ships like the hexeres were supposed to be the top ship class and not a spammable assault type, possibly with end-game elite troops on board?
Pepperidge Farm remembers. Nevertheless Pepperidge Farm won’t forget how cool it is to crush rebel scum with an entire fleet of angry Royal Peltasts.
Pepperidge Farm hears the collective sigh.
Pepperidge Farm makes compromises.
And, Pepperidge Farm delivers.

So, this is a re-arrangement of the means of recruitment for many of the mediterranean ships.
As a rule of thumb, this is what we have done:

Hexeres crewed by elite/inspiring units have been delayed to Military docks IV.*
Hexeres crewed by more regular units have been put in Military docks III+ to fill the gap.**
Tetreres have been moved to Harbours III+ from IV.
Tetreres are also now recruitable in Military docks II+.
Trihemiolias are now also recruitable in Harbours II+.

*Like Sacred Bands and Royal Peltasts. Garrisons are for now left untouched and you will still get two elite hexeres with the Dock III.
** Like Thureos Spears for those who didn’t already have Thorax swords.

The logic behind this is that a heavy and expensive Military dock is able to field a monster fleet consisting in missile penteres and elite hexeres but will also yield a standard heavy fleet of tetreres (which were the most common among the big ships) and hexeres crewed by feasible regular troops.

These expensive docks can now field a self-sufficient if as expensive naval force with a realistic basis.

Whereas the harbours are now military-wise more useful before the level IV which was before required to field tetreres (again, the spammable heavy ships, not some sort of hipster big trireme). They will also field another workhorse for the hellenistic fleets, the trihemiolias.

Basically, a level III harbour can now field on its own a realistic fleet of trihemiolias, triremes and assault tetreres, led by a big admiral ship.

Among other things, the IA should greatly benefit from this modified recruitment and possibly they can stop the hemiolias spam already.

To fill the gap left behind by the Baal Hexeres, the punics can now field tetreres and hexeres crewed by Carthaginian Marines.

(see screenshot above) Also as a limited land version from Barracks 3+.
Today with extra beards!

The Ptolemies, supposedly the top hellenic naval power, can now build in the Military Docks IV a huge octeres crewed by Thureos Spears.

They are not an admiral choice, sorry, enjoy your ennobled mobs.

Finally, we are not touching the vanilla speed/hitpoints/stuff ship system. Just the recruitment. You can use your preferred script overhaul for that.

Please note that the screenshots were made with other mods enabled (I’m that lazy), both ours and from other guys, like Sebidee’s linothoraxes, Mackles’ hoplons and Thunderbolt II’s Notitia Dignitatum. Their features might or might not be spotted in the screens but I’m reporting this anyway because fair’s fair.

I strongly recommend using our old (the very first! dem feels) but functional Greek Marines mod alongside this to have a fuller naval environment, as you may find they complement each other sweetly. If you have our Greek pack, you already got it.
