The E 44 series was the first type of electric locomotive in Germany, of which more than 100 were procured. It also represents a milestone in the development of electric locomotives, because it was the first time that running axles were dispensed with on a larger track locomotive and the Tatzlager drive, which was successful for many years, was established. The locomotives, designed as universal locomotives, proved to be very robust and reliable and shaped the railway traffic in the electrified networks of southern and central Germany from the 1930s to the 1980s.
