The two big mechanics of this mod are the 4 elements and the Avatar State, firstly I’ll explain the elements has its the main mechanic and
the Avatar State has some nuance to it. I’ll also explain some of the keywords here as well.
Devotion
Devotion is a keyword that activates if its amount is reached or exceeded. For example double kick deals 5 damage to 2 random enemies. If the total Devotion of all elements is 10 (i.e the numbers of Water + Earth + Fire + Air >= 10) you repeat it again. But Devotion can also be specific to 1 element. For example the card Reserve says Earth Devotion 10: Deal damage equal to your gold amount. If the level of Earth is greater than or equal to 10, deal the specified damage.
Quick Play
Quick play is a mechanic that only activates if its the first card played that turn, otherwise it’s effect isn’t activated.
Chakra
Chakra is a stacking power that transforms into the Avatar State every 10 stacks. So if you were to gain 15 Chakra you would enter the Avatar State and have 5 Chakra left over. The Avatar State is also a keyword, but it’s also it’s own mechanic so it’ll be explained seperately down below
The main gameplay mechanic is using the 4 elements. Over the course of the game you will play cards to increase each elements level/amount and play cards to take advantage of the increased levels in various ways. The following is a small overview of each elements main ideas but ideas can overlap with other elements in interesting and nuanced ways.
This element has a heavy emphasis on dealing damage. You have cards that deal damage for every Fire level you have, deal multiplying damage with fire, damage all enemies every turn equal to your fire level, etc. You can increase fire with cards that convert everything into fire or increase fire every time you play an attack card. It’s an element that if used consciously can deal devastating damage.
Overall Earth focuses on building up levels to gain strong buffs. Cards for this element will give you plated armour every time you increase Earth’s level, gain Strength equal to Earth’s current level, and gain block for every Earth you have at the start of every turn, and lastly deal damage equal to your gold amount if you have enough earth to activate it.
Air enables strong card draws and energy generation. For example cards will let you gain energy everytime you increase Air, or if you have enough air let you draw a card every time you play one, or draw cards and increase Air. But Air can also deal some damage, with cards that deal double damage if you meet its Air devotion. Clever use of this element will increase consistencies and even create infinite loops
Water as an element has an emphasis on HP. Several cards heal you either directly or also based on your Water level when activating the cards. For example one card deals max hp damage against monsters scaling with your water level, but also returns to you max HP. If you find yourself taking a lot of damage, pivoting into some Water cards will help.
At the start of every turn, while you’re in the Avatar State, every element will gain 1 level. In addition to this you will add a card from your draw pile to your hand at the start of every turn. But if you lose 10 hp in one turn you will lose the Avatar State, so while in the state minimize damage to keep it.
The Avatar State can also stack, so if you were to gain over 20 chakra or use an Avatar State potion while already in the state it will stack. This will just allow you to tank more hits before losing the power, For example if you lose 10 hp in one turn, it will reduce by 1. But if you still have 1 more stack of it you will need to lose another 10 hp in one turn to reduce it by 1 again.
But there are some things to keep in mind for using the Avatar State, firstly is your starting relic. This relic allows you to gain chakra while you have it. So if you choose to remove the relic at the beginning of a run, anything that gives you chakra won’t work. But this doesn’t mean you can’t enter the Avatar State, there is a card and a potion that allow you to enter the state directly when used. So at the start of a run you can decide if you want another relic instead of gaining Chakra, just an extra level of decision making at the start of every run.
