Operation Red Storm
Following the dissolution of the USSR, the Socialist Soviet Republic of Kostavya sought to chart its own path as an independent democratic republic. The first decades were marked by unstable leadership, with a series of pro-Russian presidents, many of whom maintained strong economic and military ties with Moscow. These leaders, despite their promises of reforms, failed to curb the rampant corruption that plagued the country, and many of them held onto power through manipulated elections and populist rhetoric.
However, in 2004, Kostavya’s political landscape was jolted when Illya Markovic, a reformist candidate, was elected president. Markovic, a charismatic figure, campaigned on a platform of anti-corruption, greater transparency, and pro-Western policies. His presidency marked a stark shift away from Russia, as he sought to align Kostavya more closely with the European Union and NATO. This decision deeply divided the country, with many pro-Russian factions vehemently opposing Markovic’s approach, fearing the loss of Kostavya’s traditional ties to Moscow.
In 2008, as Markovic’s reforms took hold, the country’s political and social tensions reached a breaking point. The military, largely composed of pro-Russian officers, and powerful oligarchs loyal to the old regime, saw their influence wane under Markovic’s leadership. In response, General Arkady Mirov, the head of the Kostavyan Armed Forces, launched a coup. With the backing of key military and political elites, Mirov overthrew President Markovic, forcing him and his family to flee to Germany. Markovic’s departure left Kostavya in the hands of a military dictatorship, with General Mirov at its helm.
Under Mirov’s rule, the country was plunged into a harsh period of repression. Political opposition was crushed, media outlets were silenced, and dissent was ruthlessly punished. The country’s fragile democratic institutions were dissolved, and Kostavya was officially declared a military state. Meanwhile, Kostavya’s ties to Russia grew stronger, as the regime aligned itself with Moscow in exchange for economic support and military assistance.
Mirov’s iron-fisted rule quickly led to widespread dissatisfaction. By 2013, protests had begun to spread throughout the country, fueled by the suffering of ordinary people who were caught in the grip of military rule. The largest of these protests occurred in Grislov, a major university city where students organized a peaceful demonstration against the regime’s policies. The protest, calling for free elections and the restoration of democracy, was met with brutal force.
In an incident that would come to define the conflict, Kostavyan Ground Forces (KGF) opened fire on the students, massacring dozens. The Grislov Massacre sparked outrage across the nation and ignited a wave of attacks against the government. What began as a series of small, isolated protests morphed into a full-fledged insurgency as rebel cells coordinated under a new banner: the Kostavyan Liberation Movement (KLM).
The KLM, an organized militia made up of pro-democracy activists, former soldiers, and ethnic minorities, sought to topple Mirov’s regime and restore Markovic’s vision of a free, democratic Kostavya. The movement gained momentum, drawing widespread support from the disenfranchised and those seeking an end to the military dictatorship.
As the conflict escalated, the KLM began to make significant gains, especially in Kostavya’s southern and eastern regions. In response, General Mirov turned to Russian mercenaries to bolster his forces. Alpha Bear Company, a notorious Russian private military contractor (PMC), was reportedly deployed to fight alongside the KGF against the KLM. These mercenaries, highly trained and well-funded, helped to turn the tide of battle in favor of Mirov’s forces. However, their presence only deepened the sense of foreign occupation and fueled the KLM’s resolve to resist.
The situation rapidly spiraled out of control, with violent clashes erupting in cities across the country. The KLM’s guerrilla tactics proved effective, and Kostavya was soon locked in a brutal civil war. The conflict took on a more international dimension, with Russia denying any official involvement, despite mounting evidence of support for the Kostavyan government’s forces.
By September 2014, the situation in Kostavya had reached a boiling point. Heavy fighting near the border with a neutral neighboring country threatened to spill over into a broader regional conflict. In response, NATO launched a peacekeeping mission, with a multinational force including US Marines, German soldiers, Polish soldiers, and British troops sent to secure civilian populations and prevent the conflict from spreading.
In October 2014, a US Marine platoon, working alongside the KLM, attempted to secure the evacuation of civilians from the besieged city of Lorvansk. The operation went awry when the platoon was surrounded by KGF troops and Alpha Bear mercenaries, resulting in a fierce battle. This marked the first NATO-involved battle in Kostavya, with heavy casualties on both sides. The conflict quickly escalated, and NATO forces, recognizing the severity of the situation, decided to launch Operation Red Storm — a full-scale invasion of Kostavya to defeat Mirov’s regime and support the KLM.
This setting is a scenario created by me, the idea is to create a war scenario in a fictional location, Kostavya was not based on the history of a specific Eastern European country. I wanted to create something like the cliché stories of military FPS games from the 2000s, like Arma and COD which were obviously an inspiration for this setting.
This confing has 4 factions, the USMC and the Russian mercenaries have more advanced equipment, while the Kostavyan Ground Forces are equipped with cold war Soviet equipment, and the KLM rebels use a mix of old Soviet and Western weapons.
I pretend to make expansions for more factions like the German Army and the Polish army in the future.
I hope you guys like it, have fun!
