长春拖拉机厂当年是一个仅次于洛阳一拖的大型国有企业，南有一拖，北有长拖。
为啥叫28呢？因为这台拖拉机搭载着沈阳生产的28匹马力的发动机，所以人们在平时就简化叫成28。
东方红28是中国第一款自行设计制造的拖拉机，具有重要的历史意义，见证了中国农业机械化的全新进程。
