ABOUT

This addon adds common and uncommon infected NextBots from Left 4 Dead 1/2 with behaviors that closely replicate their original game counterparts. Based on the original work by Jennifer / Jamie, all core code credit belongs to her. This version features huge bug fixes, performance tweaks, and has been separated into its own standalone addon.

FEATURES INCLUDED IN THIS ADDON

• Uses original animations, sounds, models, and materials.
• Includes a simple AI director with Zombat included.

• L4D1 Version (Beta) • L4D2 Version (Beta)

• Faithfully recreated AI behavior and logic, closely resembling the original Left 4 Dead infected.
• Includes uncommon infected variants like Riot, Clown, CEDA, and Mudman, etc, with unique mechanics:

• CEDA infected are immune to fire. • Riot infected have bullet resistance. • Mudmen obscure your screen on hit, similar to the original game. • Workers ignore bombs/grenades. • Jimmy Gibbs Jr. has 5000HP. • Fallen survivors have 1000HP.

• Partial compatibility with other NPCs/NextBots.
• Huge performance improvements and fixes for null entity errors.
• Limit for total infected (30 max alive at once; excess spawns are auto-removed).
• Automatically removes infected when they cluster too tightly or become stuck.
• Basic grenade/pipe bomb distraction logic.
• Headshot effects.
• Knockback behavior when taking DMG_BLAST damage.
• Supports prop climbing, allowing infected to scale obstacles like in the original game.
• Infected can collapse to the ground when idle, mimicking authentic idle behavior.
• Fire damage results in death animations and effects that replicate the original Left 4 Dead.
• Implements angry facial expressions for added realism and immersion.
• Includes mob behavior logic, enabling infected to coordinate and move in groups like a true horde.

• This also allows the infected to surround you just like in the original game.

• Gender-specific sound variations for male and female infected.
• Falling animations triggered when infected drop from significant heights.
• Includes vomit particles when they are inactive.
• Implement a ConVar to change the "difficulty" of the nextbots, this will change their attack damage/speed.

• Console command: l4d_infected_nextbot_difficulty [1-3]

• They can break doors.
• Different attack animations depending on the enemy size (incapacitated attack animations)
• Flinch animations depending on where they are shot.
• They are very vulnerable to fire and it spreads in them.
• Infected recognize unreachable targets and will no longer attempt to chase them, reducing lag and improving performance.

• They will play a special animation to indicate frustration or confusion, just like in Left 4 Dead 2.

KNOWN ISSUES

• Custom blood particles (from L4D2) are a bit buggy.
• Zombat sometimes does not function properly in multiplayer.
• This addon appears to have compatibility issues with TFA Base and its related addons. If you are using TFA Base, you may encounter unusual behavior or bugs with the NextBots. Please refrain from reporting these as addon bugs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I’m getting a Lua error / my game crashed!

• If you’re experiencing a crash or Lua error, please post the full error message in the bug report discussion thread. If it’s a crash, describe the steps required to reproduce it so I can look into it.

Why do I need to own Left 4 Dead 2? Why not just include the models/sounds/animations in the addon?

• There are a couple of reasons: First, porting all the models, animations, materials, and sounds would take a very long time due to the number of animations involved. Second and more importantly, distributing Valve assets through Workshop addons is against the Steam Workshop Terms of Service. You must own and mount Left 4 Dead 2 in Garry’s Mod to use this addon.
