Despite powerful legislative and economic reforms by the newly elected South Lombakka government, instability resulting from a bloody civil war that has lasted more than 25 years and officially ended two years ago has left the country in a state of semi-anarchy in many provinces. Although the main ethnic groups in conflict, the Yamué and the Sanka, have signed peace, the enormous flow of arms trafficking into the country during the 1990s and the destruction of the conflict have allowed armed groups of bandits to roam freely, raiding towns and villages.
In view of an already completely unsustainable situation, the United Nations has authorized the deployment of a peacekeeping mission to collaborate with the government in stabilizing and protecting the civilian population. This mission, UNMISL (United Nations Mission in South Lombakka), is made up of more than 5,000 troops deployed throughout the country.
