This mod introduces Salamander’s Wool, a material with properties inspired by asbestos and its history in real world.
Known for its incredible fire resistance, but also causing dangerous health risks.
In the deepest forges and stone halls, the dwarves unearthed a strange mineral, gray and fibrous, that could withstand the heat of magma itself.
They called it Salamander’s Wool, after the mythical creature said to live within flames. Unlike any wool known to the surface world, this substance could be spun into thread and woven into fireproof garments and tapestries. It quickly became one of the dwarves’ most prized exports.
Few rumors say that this ‘wool’ is mined from stone, and its dust seemed to linger in the lungs of those who worked with it for too long.
The dwarves, proud of their discovery, dismissed concerns and reaped profits from traders eager for the miraculous material.
But over time, cases of mysterious ailments began to spread among dwarven workers and craftspeople who had long been exposed to Salamander’s Wool, leading to the root of knowledge about this dangerous secret.
Goblins refer to this material as fire rat cloth[en.wikipedia.org].
Some elven druids were intrigued by not feeling any life suffering in the ‘wool,’ and some elves started calling it sufferless fabric, valuing it for creating no suffering to animals. Meanwhile, other elven groups see it as soulless fabric due to the lack of a life spark in it and prefer to avoid it.
- Salamander’s Wool – A fibrous, heat-resistant material that dwarves can extract from various stone sources. It behaves similarly to asbestos and can be spun into yarn. Despite being a mineral, dwarves long referred to it as "wool" to traders.
- Asbestos Dust – A byproduct of working with Salamander’s Wool. Prolonged exposure to this dust can cause impairments in dwarves, particularly to their respiratory systems, simulating the effects of asbestos exposure in real life.
This mod adds a reaction (in the craftsman’s workshop) to extract Salamander’s Wool from specific stones that are known to contain asbestos fibers, such as schist, marble, and slate. Dwarves can use their strand extraction skill to obtain this valuable material.
In real life, asbestos is a group of minerals made of microscopic fibers that are resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals. Historically, asbestos was used in various industries for its fireproofing properties, much like Salamander’s Wool in Dwarf Fortress. However, exposure to asbestos dust has been linked to severe respiratory conditions, including asbestosis and lung cancer. As awareness of its dangers has grown, many countries have banned or severely restricted its use. This mod is inspired by the historical use of asbestos; please see: Wikipedia[en.wikipedia.org].
This mod should be compatible with most other mods. It doesn’t overwrite vanilla objects but instead adds new materials and reactions.
- 1.01 – Initial release
- 1.02 – Fixing mineral fibers dust value (to 0 as useless)
