T-60 [USSR]
A light tank that was developed during the first months of German invasion of the Soviet Union. A derivative of the T-40 amphibious tank, T-60 trades its predecessor amphibious nature for a slightly better protection and a more powerful 20mm TNSh automatic cannon that was a tank-adopted variant of the aircraft-mounted ShVAK cannon.
Inadequate against most of contemporary German tanks, it was primarily intended to serve in an infantry support vehicle role as a stopgap solution until the production of heavier T-34 and KV tanks could be established in necessary numbers. T-60 could be built in facilities that normally could not support tank production due to the lack of necessary machinery, such as automotive manufacturing or shipbuilding plants.
A total of 5,665 tanks were produced from August of 1941 until February of 1943, when it was replaced in production by its better armed and better protected derivative, the T-70 tank.
