Description:
"The movement of the Heaven is powerful. Thus the superior man nerves himself to tireless endeavors.
The potential of the Earth is receptive. Thus the superior man sustains others with boundless virtues."
– Book of Changes

The Temple of Heaven in Beijing was a ceremonial building for the Ming and Qing emperors to perform rituals to the Heaven for abundance. Initially, the Yongle Emperor built the Altar of Heaven and Earth on this site, but during the reign of the Jiajing Emperor, the functions of offering sacrifices to Heaven and Earth were separated and another Temple of Earth was built in the northern suburb, while the original Temple of Heaven and Earth was renamed as the Temple of Heaven, dedicated to performing rituals to the Heaven. The original Tiandi Altar was renamed as the Temple of Prayer for the Year of the Dragon. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is the main building of the Temple of Heaven, which is supported without the use of beams and nails, solely supported by colossal pillars made of nanmu wood interlocked with square rafters. The design of theHall of Prayer for Good Harvests incorporates the ideas of traditional Chinese cosmology. The domes covered by glazed tiles symbolizes the heavens, the marble base symbolizes the earth, and the number and distribution of the nanmu wood pillars symbolize the concepts of the four seasons, the twelve lunar months, the twelve shichens and the Twenty-eight Mansions (Chinese constellations).
