Red Storm Rising – The Soviets
Muslim militants from Soviet Azerbaijan destroy an oil production refinery in Nizhnevartovsk, threatening to cripple the Soviet Union’s economy due to oil shortages. After much deliberation, the Soviet Politburo decides to seize the Persian Gulf by military force in order to recoup the country’s oil losses. Knowing that the United States had pledged to defend the oil-producing countries in the Persian Gulf, the Soviets decide that neutralizing NATO is a necessary first step before its military operation can take place. If West Germany were to be neutralized and occupied, the Soviets believe that the United States would not move to rescue the Arab states since it could meet its oil needs from the Western Hemisphere alone.
To divert attention from the impending operation, the Politburo embarks upon an elaborate maskirovka to disguise both their predicament and their intentions. The Soviets publicly declare their arms reduction proposal to scrap their obsolete nuclear missile submarines. The KGB then carries out a false flag operation involving a bomb being detonated in a Kremlin building, framing a KGB sleeper agent as a West German intelligence spy involved in the incident. The Politburo publicly denounces the West German government and calls for retaliation.
Even though a planned attack on a NATO communications facility in Lammersdorf was compromised when a Spetsnaz officer was arrested, the Soviet Army pushes through with their advance operations in Germany. They suffer reverses on the first night of the war, however, when NATO stealth and fighter-bomber aircraft achieve air superiority over Central Europe by eliminating Soviet fighter and AEW&C aircraft, and destroying key bridges that much of the Soviet Army has yet to cross.
This is the moment, when our missions will start: the North Atlantic is on stake!

Mission One:
Komrade! The Soviet Force try to close the Suvlaki GAP with a strong landing operation against Iceland. You must reach the shores, at least two landing ship must survive, with the addition the Moskva and the Slava class cruisers must not be destroyed. Expect heavy resistance from various NATO assets. We detected a cruiser group somewhere south-east of your position. Expect some US submarines on the way to Iceland. Our Tu-22M bombers and a recon Tu-95 plane will arrive soon to assist you.
Mission Two:
Iceland was captured, now the atlantic barrier is open, the Keflavik airbase is ours. Some of our fighters and bombers are already relocated there, and the our submarines are already on their way to the north atlantic. The NATO is sending convoys after convoys to europe, without these shipments the NATO forces will be in big trouble in West-Germany. We must crush this road on the Atlantic – so our comrades could reach their objectives faster.
Mission Three
The NATO is furious about our success so far on the North-Atlantic. Now they are trying to clean the waters from our submarines, many air, surface and sub assets are searching for our submarines, so their CBG can leave Norfolk, and reach Europe with relatively safe way. Destroy as many NATO assets as you can, and do not loose more than three submarines. Our carrier killer weapon, the K-525 Arkhanglesk must not sink – our future plans are based on it! Rely heavily on Keflvik AFB.
Mission Four
Our humint informed us, that the Independence aircraft carrier has left Norfolk, with very strong group of cruisers and destroyers. The Carrier Battle Group was also detected by satellites too, last known position marked on the map. Your task is to destroy the Independence.
Mission Five
Last week, the NATO had bombed our base at Iceland, Keflavik is closed for at least 2 more weeks. In the same time, we had intel from our humint sources from Norfolk, that two marine divisions were embarked, and sailed to east. Our presence in Iceland is the worst situation for the NATO, and the highest priority for them to recapture the island, and take control over the North-Atlantic. The americans already reactivated the Iowa, and use it as a tomahawk platform, to destroy all our positions at the shores of Iceland. We were collecting all our forces, your task is to take command, and destroy the landing force aproaching Reykjavik. However we do not have too much additional intel about the USN forces, our satellite over the North-Atlantic was shot down three days ago. Comrade, you have good skills to detect and destroy the enemy, use everything to crush the arrogant Americans!
Mission Six
The US Navy with the USMC were mostly captured Iceland, some of our airborne division still fight but they do not have any chance to win. We have lost most of our north fleet asstes in the region. Some of our vessels, and submarines are trying to leave the area, to reach safe ports near Norway and Kola peninsula. They must survive, we need them! We do not know what USN forces will try to sink them, but we think they are still too busy with Iceland, so mostly submarine and air threat is possible, from Scottland and Iceland.
Mission Seven
The war is not going well, and we are in trouble so many places. The NATO forces are attacking our bases, storming our positions around the coast of nordern Norway. Our most important base is the captured NATO airbase of Bodo. We detected that some USN vessels are approaching the port, we think they would like to land their troops soon. You do not have too many assets left to protect Bodo, but do what you can do, to stop the Americans!
Mission Eight
There is a stalemate in Europe, all the fronts are halted. But this will be different soon, beacause we lost our superiority over the Atlantic, and the NATO convoys are arriving freely. We have only one chance to make a diference. The Soviet Fleet, and the one and only Soviet Aircraft Carrier must excape from the Baltic sea. The carrier must survive. The task force is the strongest the Soviet Fleet can create, and could be supported by the Air Force base near Kaliningrad. Expect many submarines, and some vessels from various NATO countries.
