Falklands War
The Falklands War or Malvinas War was a military conflict fought between April and June 1982 between Argentina and the United Kingdom for control and possession of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
On the eve of the war, Argentina was in the midst of a devastating economic crisis and a large-scale civil protest against the military junta that ruled the country.
The government, led by General Leopoldo Galtieri, the then president, decided to play the card of nationalistic sentiment by launching what it considered a quick and easy war to reclaim the Falklands, over which Argentina claimed sovereignty.
Although taken by surprise by the attack, the United Kingdom organized a naval task force to repel the Argentine forces that had occupied the archipelagos.
After heavy fighting, the British prevailed and the islands returned to UK control.
The political consequences of the war were profound: dissent and protests against the military government grew in Argentina, sending it to its final fall, while a wave of patriotism swept through the United Kingdom, giving strength to the government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
The victorious conflict gave rise to British ambitions for post-imperial power (after the severe disappointment following decolonization and defeat in the Suez conflict), demonstrating that the UK still had the ability to successfully project its military might even in a war. a huge distance from the motherland.
