AD 711 – The Byzantine-Arab Wars 2.0
This mod transports all the units from the Age of Charlemagne (AoC) expansion pack into a historically accurate Grand Campaign scenario set in the year AD 711, during the Age of the Emperor Justinian II & the Byzantine-Arab wars.
A century ago, the Emperor Heraclius had saved the empire from the jaws of annihilation. In a titanic struggle against the Sassanid Persians, he marched his armies deep into the East, reclaiming lost provinces and restoring imperial pride. Yet his triumph was short-lived. From the deserts of Arabia came a new faith and a new power — the warriors of Islam — who struck at the weakened empires with unrelenting force. Syria, Egypt, and North Africa, the richest jewels of Rome’s crown, were lost in a matter of decades.
The Byzantine–Arab Wars have raged without pause since that first onslaught, fought in the mountains of Anatolia, across the sea-lanes of the Mediterranean, and at the very gates of Constantinople itself. The Eastern Empire is locked in a fight not for territory alone, but for its survival.
Now, in AD 711, the throne is held by Justinian II “Rhinotmetus”, a man of fierce intellect, volcanic will, and boundless ambition. Exiled and mutilated by his enemies, he has returned to reclaim the diadem, convinced that destiny has chosen him as the restorer of Rome’s glory — to rival not only his grandfather Heraclius, but also the legendary Justinian the Great, who once ruled a united Mediterranean world. For Justinian II, the war with the Arabs is not merely a defensive struggle: it is the crucible through which he will forge a new imperial golden age.
But the task is monumental. The Umayyad Caliphate is at the height of its power, its fleets and armies pressing into Asia Minor, raiding the Aegean, and even now sweeping into the far west to crush the Visigothic Kingdom in Hispania. Byzantium’s armies are disciplined and its fleets command the terrible secret of Greek fire — yet the empire is surrounded by threats and riven by intrigue.
The emperor’s dream is clear: to reclaim the lost provinces, to avenge the defeats of the past century, and to prove himself the equal of the great rulers of Rome’s history. Whether this dream will save the empire… or destroy it, lies in your hands.
