Description:
"Beyond Janganmun the dragon banners were raised,
guards and courtiers were all dressed in brocade.
Five divisions marshaled troops as the alligator drums roared,
two lines cleared the way as bonghwang flutes soared."
– Jeong Yakyong

Suwon Hwaseong is a fortress built at the end of the 18th century during the Joseon Dynasty, commissioned by King Jeongjo to commemorate his father. King Jeongjo’s father was ordered by King Yeongjo to be confined in a rice crest for eight days during midsummer and starved to death. King Jeongjo restored his father’s reputation, relocated his father’s tomb to Suwon, and constructed a new city and the fortress Hwaseong to protect it. The designer of Suwon Hwaseong was Jeong Yakyong, a prominent scholar of Silhak ("School of Practical Study"). Drawing lessons from the failure to effectively defend against invaders during the Imjin War, Jeong Yakyong combined traditional Korean fortress design with fortification techniques from China and the West, incorporating gunholes and cannon forts into the fortress to adapt to the challenges of firearms warfare. The northern gate of Hwaseong Fortress is named Janganmun (named after the ancient Chinese capital Chang’an), featuring a double-eaved gable roof and an outer barbican for protection. It is the largest existing ancient city gate in Korea today. The design and construction process of Hwaseong Fortress is meticulously recorded in the "Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe", so after the fortress was severely damaged during the Korean War, South Korea was able to restore the fortress based on this manual. In 1997, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Changdeokgung, recognizing its architectural techniques and historical significance.
