Description:

Introduces Hecataeus of Miletus (Ionic Greece) to Civilization VI.

Background:

Hecataeus was one of the first historians of ancient Greece and is often called the "father of geography" for the first well-known systematic description of the world, which survives in fragments of his 2 book work Periodos ges. Hecataeus did not publish the first known Greek Mediterranean map, that is credited to Anaximander, but he greatly improved on it through information from his own travels– covering information on cultures all the way to Gibraltar.

Hecataeus is also known for his 4 book work titled: Genealogies, which highlights skepticism of the truth of ancient Greek mythology. His work became a major point of interest for scholars and philosophers at the Milesian school sparking rationalism and stepping toward the basis of scientific thought. The work goes so far such that in it’s opening it states:

"I write what I deem true; for the stories of the Greeks are manifold and seem to me ridiculous."

When Ionic Greek city states desired independence from Persian control, Hecataeus argued strongly against the Ionian Revolt– which would later end in Lydian favor. During peace talks, Hecataeus negotiated with Persia as an ambassador, convincing Persian rulers to maintain the Greek Ionian constitutions and to strike an agreement where tributes sent to Persia were fixed and according to what city states could afford to pay.

UD:
Acropolis: theater square replacement, cheaper to build, higher adjacency bonus, but must be built on hills.

UU:
Hoplite: replaces spearman, and is stronger. +10 strength when adjacent to another Hoplite

UA:
Surrounded By Glory: +5% science per city state you are suzerain of
*This is a tweak on Pericles Surrounded By Glory abillity, switch culture to science

Maintains the base game Greek abilities, such as acropolis, hoplite, and Plato’s republic ability.

Note: will spawn with other greek leaders in play since the civilization is Ionic Greece (ideally, I should have made it an alternate leader, but wanted more control over features and for future mod plans. So renaming it from Greece to Ionic Greece is my compromise until further down the line)

Artwork:
Artwork that is not from the base game is mainly derived and edited from Chat GPT.
*I acknowledge that the architecture of the temple of delphi depicted has several details that are incorrect

The (public domain) map image in the leader portrait is created by: Bibi Saint-Pol, and the publiic domain information can be found here: (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hecataeus_world_map-en.svg)

*I may or may not in the future do leader portrait designs without AI; I am not likely to draw my own architecture art in
the future
(I welcome a replacement if someone wants to draw an equal quality but accurate model for the background)

Special Thanks:
MC for the amazing civilization template that greatly simplified and sped up this process.
