Cargo and waste trams pack for Early Start
A pack of cargo trams able to transport large loads on both tramway road and electric rail.
The chief advantage of these vehicles is that they have a much larger capacity than Early Start lorries and are able to use both railway and road network (the new wooden low-speed electrical rails are ideal for this) to deliver goods straight into or out of an urban area. They will be ideal for medium range transport into large, dense cities, to use as small-scale industrial rail in dense manufacturing areas, and for Early Start games when lorries are relatively low capacity. I think they will also be an interesting alternative to horses in early cities when those come out.
- Boxcar tram (covered) in 100t and 60t sizes;
- Waste tram in 80t and 40t sizes;
- Meat tram in 50t and 30t sizes.
- Dry bulk tram in 100t and 60t sizes.
- Open cargo tram in 110t and 55t sizes.
All have a top speed of 70kph, come in seven colours, and are available 1927-1974 for roubles. Zombiedragon is currently working on some higher performance dollar alternatives – look out for those 🙂
You will need special modded tram cargo stations to make these work (especially to load the waste quickly). Fortunately, I’ve just released a set, which you can find here.
- The locomotive model is the H51 tram locomotive by Zombiedragon, used with permission. These were used on transport routes in The Hague from 1927, known locally as ‘Strijkijzers’ or ‘Clothing irons’ because of their shape. You can read more about them here (in Dutch.)[sleutelspoor.nl]
- The meat, dry bulk and boxcar wagons are from Monotone’s British Rail wagons pack, used with permission.
- The waste wagons are the Wuppertal trucks from the Early Start DLC, which you will need to use this mod.
- The "open" hull wagons are the vanilla G41-C covered wagon, with the capacity and cost cut in half.
Many thanks to Zombiedragon for all his help and encouragement on this project and for his H51 loco model; to Monotone for his British Rail wagons; to Tigrovica for exploring what’s possible with tram cargo infrastructure; and to Peter and 3division for helping me out with queries about tram mechanics.
I had a lot of fun putting these together and am now comfortable with the process, and am wondering if there are any other early locomotives and carriages I should be adding to this system. If you’d like to collaborate on this, leave a comment or message me on Discord.
There are certain technical limits to tram cargo stations which 3division have told me unfortunately can’t be fixed. Technically the entire payload is in the locomotive, so it is not possible to change the configuration of the trains or to visualise waste (hence closed waste and "open" trucks).These will work very well on lines between tram cargo and/or railway cargo stations but will not work with delivery offices (except railway DOs to only run between rail cargo stations).
