Hwangnyongsa (World Wonder)
– Iryeon, Samguk Yusa
The rulers of the Silla Kingdom were devout Buddhists and built numerous Buddhist temples, with the most notable being the Hwangnyongsa (“imperial dragon temple”) in Gyeongju. The Hwangnyongsa was first constructed in 553, and according to legend, the ruler at the time, King Jinheung, initially planned to build a palace there, but upon seeing a yellow dragon appear, he changed his mind and built a Buddhist temple instead. The Hwangnyongsa subsequently became the royal temple of successive Silla monarchs. The Buddha statue cast during King Jinheung’s reign and the nine-story pagoda constructed during Queen Seondeok’s reign were regarded as national treasures of the Silla Kingdom. The Hwangnyongsa Temple did not stand the test of time as it was destroyed during the Mongol invasion of Goryeo in 1238. However, the discovery of a large number of Silla-period artifacts at the site has allowed modern people to gain insight into the architectural techniques and religious culture of the Silla Kingdom.
