Republic Intelligence was an intelligence service of the Galactic Republic. It was also referenced as Military Intelligence during the Clone Wars. The clone intelligence units as well as certain activities conducted by the clone troopers of the Special Operations Brigade were considered part of Republic Intelligence operations. Republic Intelligence was separate from its counterpart under the Galactic Senate, the Senate Bureau of Intelligence, but during the Clone Wars, Armand Isard served as director for both intelligence services.

As part of the Republic Military, Republic Intelligence was separate from the Republic’s three major civilian intelligence agencies including the Republic Security Organization, the Interstellar Consortium on Technology, and the Special Acquisitions Branch of the Library of the Republic.[5] Among its sub-divisions was the Analysis Bureau of Republic Intelligence. The Senate Bureau of Intelligence was a separate civilian agency which is with the Senate. It was led by the Director of Republic Intelligence. Armand Isard was the director during the Clone Wars and also served as Director of the Senate Bureau of Intelligence.

The clones assigned to Covert Operations were elite clone troopers serving with the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. These troopers were mainly assigned to perform "dirty work" that most clones would find questionable and unethical, mainly finding and eliminating clone troopers who’ve deserted the army.

They were standard clone troopers, drawn from rank-and-file formations, who had shown some potential for "dirty work", and were trained by Null ARCs N-10 and N-5 in commando tactics. However, the "dirty work" they were sent out to do wasn’t always as clear-cut as expected: covert ops troopers were occasionally sent to eliminate other clones who had chosen to desert from the Republic and live their own, independent, lives.
