E5/H5 Series Shinkansen / 新幹線E5系・H5系
The E5 Series (E5系) and H5 Series (H5系) are Shinkansen train types operated by JR East and JR Hokkaido respectively, both serving the Tōhoku Shinkansen and Hokkaido Shinkansen.
Introduced in 2011 as a successor to the E2 series, the E5 series is the fastest Shinkansen in Japan with a operating top speed of 320km/h. The type was also the first to offer Gran Class, which offers more comfort and amenities than existing green cars and are comparable to first class in airlines. The H5 series is a cold-weather derivative of the E5 series owned by JR Hokkaido, which features an upgraded snow plow and improved resistance to harsh weather conditions. Both types operate as 10-car sets on Hayabusa, Hayate, Yamabiko and Nasuno services and may be substituted for each other in case of disruptions. To date, 51 E5 sets and 4 H5 sets totalling 550 cars have been produced, with all except 1 earthquake damaged H5 set in operation.
