JR East 719 Series / JR東日本719系
The 719 Series (719系) is a 2-car EMU operated by JR East in Fukushima and Yamagata Prefectures.
Manufactured from 1989-1991, the 719 series aimed to improve commuter and regional services operated by JR East’s Sendai Branch. Compared to previous rolling stock, the number of doors per side was increased from 2 to 3, the interior layout was changed to better withstand rush hour congestion, and the 2-car sets allowed for greater flexibility. 108 cars were produced in 54 sets, of these 42 sets were the 0 series, the rest being 12 5000 series formations. The latter type being a standard-gauge variant for the re-gauged portion of the Ōu Main Line (often referred to as the Yamagata Line), which shares track with Yamagata Shinkansen services. Once a common type across the region, the 0 series trains was fully retired by 2020. One set was converted to the sightseeing cafe car "FruiTea", which operated from 2015-2023. All 5000 series sets remain in service on the Yamagata Line.
