Description:

The KiHa 126 Series (キハ126系) is a DMU operated by JR West in the San’in region.

Developed as a part of an improvement project for the San’in Main Line between Tottori and Yonago, The KiHa 126 series is a one-man operated diesel railcar introduced in 2000. The base variant is a fixed 2-car set, produced with financial assistance from Tottori and Shimane prefectures. The interior is a semi-cross layout, mostly in bays of 4 seats, with some long seats near the doors. Engines on the vehicles are the same Komatsu model as those found on the KiHa 126 limited express cars, it is possible to switch between 450PS and 265PS due to tracks east of Tottori being limited to a lower output. Although the maximum speed is only 100km/h, the acceleration performance have been substantially improved compared to previous types. In 2003, a sub-variant designated as the KiHa 121 series begun operations on the Inbi Line and Sakai Line, it has driving cabs fitted to both ends for single car operations on quieter lines. A relatively low number of 29 cars were produced in total, they are operated preferentially in Shimane and Tottori prefectures. In addition to the aforementioned services, the type is also seen on the Hakubi Line due to a lack of EMUs in the area.
