Description:

The KiHa E120 Series (キハE120形) is a DMU operated by JR East in the Aizu Region of Fukushima Prefecture.

Introduced by JR East’s Niigata Branch in 2008, the KiHa E120 Series is a single car DMU manufactured in and designed for the region. Compared to the KiHa 110 Series, It has a more spacious cabin and wider double doors to increase functional capacity. The type has a low floor design and extending slats were installed to minimize the gap between the platform and the train. Barrier free access had been considered in each part of the vehicles, there is a wheelchair space with an interactive emergency notification system installed, and the accessible toilet is placed on the opposite side. The doors are controlled semi-automatically with buttons to reduce heat loss in winter, while tempered glass windows which blocks 100% of infrared rays reduces the energy consumption of the air conditioning system. Only 8 cars of the type were produced, initially operating on the Yonezaka Line and Ban’etsu West Line. The series was transferred to the Aizu region to address a shortage of vehicles after the Tadami Line was finally restored 11 years after flooding destroyed a section of tracks. As of current, the Tadami Line makes up the vast majority of services carried out by KiHa E120 vehicles, often coupled together with KiHa 110 series vehicles to form consists of up to 5 cars.
