Tokyu 5000 Series / 東急5000系
The 5000 Series (5000系) is a commuter EMU operated by Tokyu Railways since 2002.
Developed as a new standard commuter vehicle for the Tokyu network, the 5000 series was manufactured to replace the previous generation 8000 and 8500 series, which were around 20-30 years old. While Tokyu had planned to renew the existing fleet, it was ultimately decided that introducing a generation of lighter, high performance vehicles would be more cost effective over the long run. The 5000 series were based on the E231 Series, developed jointly by JR East and Tokyu Car Corporation, a Tokyu subsidiary at the time. By sharing a high degree of commonality with the mass produced E231 Series, the cost per train was 30% less than the 3000 series introduced in 1999. The base 5000 Series 10 car sets were deployed on the Den-en-toshi Line, and from 2005 2-3 6-door cars were present on some sets, these were all reverted back to 4 door cars by 2017 due to the installation of platform screen doors on the line. Some 5000 series cars were converted to 8 cars and transferred to the Tōyoko Line. The 5050 series are the variant for the Tōyoko Line, Shin-Yokohama Line, and the various other through operating lines. These were built as both 8 and 10 car sets, with the 8 car ones labelled as 5000-4000 series to distinguish them. From 2022, the reserved seating Q-seat service was introduced on some 5000-4000 series vehicles during rush hour, utilizing convertible seats. Lastly, the 5080 series variant was produced for Meguro Line through services, and were modified to compatible with the Sotetsu network. These were initially built as 6 cars but were all converted to 8 cars by 2022. In total, 662 cars were built across the sub-variants, they are in active service with the exception of scrapped 6-door cars and 2 accident damaged sets.
