Description:

AUGUST 28, 1997

Good morning.

We are now faced with the most significant geopolitical crisis in history since Able Archer 83 or even the Cuban Missile Crisis itself: the MRSU rebellion in Russia has seized control of the city of St. Petersburg and claims to be in possession of several mobile ICBMs originally located near the border of Estonia. On top of this, Russian and NATO intelligence can confirm that the newly-operational aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and its fleet of Su-33s have been captured by the rebels and are now sailing out of port to break a blockade by loyalist forces and strike NATO-aligned targets within Germany and Scandinavia; they are threatening to hit London or Berlin with their nuclear assets if NATO moves to assist the Russians in encircling and liberating St. Petersburg. It is now critical for global security that this rebellion be permanently crushed and its weapons disabled, but we have somehow been caught flat-footed by this unexpected escalation and have limited units available at this time since the demilitarisation of the former Iron Curtain several years ago.

With most of our available carriers currently either in the Persian Gulf or dealing with the ongoing civil war in Yugoslavia, we’ve had to pull the John F. Kennedy from our reserves and fill its depleted air wing with whatever squadrons we have available into a reassigned Task Force 60; the British Prime Minister has agreed to complement our assets with the HMS Invincible and a handful of its own escorts, but their capability to match the MRSU’s own aircraft and ships in combat are comparatively limited. Some elements of the Russian Navy have similarly maintained their loyalties to the democratic government in Moscow, but they too are likely to be targeted by their former comrades for their actions.

However, we are not without our own trump cards. A team of Spetsnaz commandoes aligned with the Russian government were able to capture an MRSU missile cruiser disguised as a merchant vessel less than an hour prior to Task Force 60’s arrival in the AO, and its firepower should be more than enough to allow the NATO fleet to survive the initial wave of anti-ship attacks. On top of that, two flights of brand-new B-2 stealth bombers equipped with JDAMs and Tomahawk cruise missiles are en route to lay waste to the MRSU’s fleet and its airbase in St. Petersburg; they are being escorted by an E-3 AWACS and several F-15Es armed to the teeth with enough air-to-air missiles to match the Kuznetsov’s Su-33s—we will simply need to survive the initial assault long enough for them to arrive.

I cannot understate the importance of this mission: failure to protect our own forces from the MRSU’s assault will galvanise its forces throughout the former Soviet Union and potentially spell doom for President Yeltsin’s government. Failure to secure or eliminate the MRSU’s ICBMs will allow the ex-Soviets to obliterate any city within Russia or the rest of Europe at their discretion. And the collapse of the ongoing siege of St. Petersburg could potentially culminate in the end of democratic rule in Russia and bring the world as we know it back to the Cold War, less than a decade after its conclusion.

Failure is not an option. We will win this engagement, or we will all otherwise suffer greatly…

MISSION OBJECTIVES

1. Eliminate the Admiral Kuznetsov
2. Destroy the MRSU-held airbase in St. Petersburg
3. Destroy the MRSU-held ICBMs
4. Ensure that the USS John F. Kennedy and/or the HMS Invincible survive

ASSETS

– USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), the HMS Invincible, and their naval escorts
– 3x Kara-class missile cruisers as loyalist Russian forces
– 2x flights of B-2 stealth bombers (Able and Baker Squadrons)
– 2x flights of F-15Es (Strider and Cyclops Squadrons)
– 1x E-3 AWACS
– 1x Project 2498 Zyetseth-class assault vessel

ENEMY FORCES

– Admiral Kuznetsov with its Su-33 air wing and naval escorts
– At least 2x MRSU-aligned missile cruisers
– Enemy air reinforcements from the MRSU-held St. Petersburg air base
– Enemy ICBM launchers, with SAMs providing air defense
– Unconfirmed reports of MRSU-affiliated submarines in the area

IMPORTANT INTEL

– Civilian ships and aircraft are in the AO
– Friendly reinforcements will not arrive in time before the initial wave of enemy attacks
– Air wing within the John F. Kennedy is significantly depleted due to limited resources
– ICBMs may be deployed if situation escalates further

Good luck!
