This is a legendary warship that has weathered the storms of war and witnessed the evolution of aviation technology—the USS Midway (CV-41), an aircraft carrier that completed its modernization in 1990 and was about to set sail for the Gulf War.
She was one of the longest-serving aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1945 to 1992, spanning nearly half a century. After several large-scale modernizations, the USS Midway in 1990 was completely revitalized, with a full-load displacement exceeding 60,000 tons, and its flight deck strengthened and expanded, capable of efficiently operating the then-advanced carrier air wing.
Her carrier-based air force was elite, typically carrying 45 to 65 aircraft of various types, including F/A-18 Hornet fighter-attack aircraft for fleet air defense and superiority, A-6 Intruder attack aircraft for precision ground strikes, E-2 Hawkeye early warning aircraft for airborne early warning, and SH-60 Seahawk helicopters for anti-submarine and search and rescue missions, forming a comprehensive long-range strike and defense system.
